Check tyres and have a safe TRIP

National Highways has launched a journey planning campaign to help road users stay safe on the UK road network this autumn and winter. The campaign includes tips for drivers on how to prepare for long and unfamiliar journeys.

Drivers are being encouraged to plan their journey in advance. This includes ensuring all necessary vehicle checks are conducted, as well as factoring in rest stops before they set off on any long journey.

With weather conditions changing in autumn, National Highways is focusing on the ‘inspect’ element of the TRIP acronym, with a call for drivers to check their tyres before setting off.

Tyre issues are the biggest reason for breakdowns on motorways, with over 51,500 tyre related breakdowns on England’s motorways and major A-roads in 2023. (Source: National Highways Control Works data).

The TRIP elements of the campaign are:

  • Top up – fuel/battery, oil, and screen wash
  • Rest – plan your rest stops every two hours
  • Inspect – tyre pressure and tread
  • Prepare – for all weather conditions.
