Exploring the road to EV adoption

A panel of industry experts will delve into some of the biggest challenges and opportunities in driving EV adoption at the BVRLA’s Fleets in Charge Conference in July.

Key discussions, in the panel chaired by Auto Trader, will explore how tailored messaging can better engage diverse user groups, including van drivers, SMEs, and tradespeople. With negative press often clouding public perception, the panel will discuss strategies to educate consumers on how EVs can work in even the most challenging scenarios.

The session also hopes to highlight positive progress, such as improved confidence among women EV drivers, and examine the evolving role of OEMs in educating consumers. The panel will consider topics including:

  • whether OEMs should be incentivised for their marketing efforts
  • how the used EV market may require a different approach
  • what innovations are on the horizon
  • home charging challenges
  • leveraging salary sacrifice schemes to broaden EV appeal.

Another expert panel, chaired by Fleet Assist, will explore the pressing skills shortage in the EV sector. The discussion will cover how the shortage impacts both the new and used car markets, and what steps are being taken to address it while promoting greater diversity in the workforce.

With vehicles becoming increasingly connected and reliant on digital technology, the panel will explore whether this shift presents an opportunity to attract talent from computer sciences and tech backgrounds. Attendees will hear about innovative recruitment strategies, the effectiveness of current training schemes, and whether access to vehicle data could hinder technician development.

The panel will also debate the role of AI in the sector — exploring whether it poses a threat or offers new opportunities to enhance skills and support the industry.

The Conference is taking place on Wednesday 2 July at the QEII Centre in London. Themed ‘Changing Demand or Demanding Change?’, the event will explore the evolving landscape of fleet electrification, addressing both the shifting market forces and the policy interventions shaping the industry’s future.
