Landmark agreement regarding post-Brexit Northern Ireland

The UK government has unveiled the Windsor Framework, providing a new legal and UK constitutional framework for trading goods between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

The framework was agreed between Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen to resolve trading issues that emerged with Great Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union. The Windsor Framework creates two ‘lanes’ in which goods can travel. The green lane allows free-flowing movement of goods between Northern Ireland and Great Britain when the goods are destined for either market.

For goods destined for the EU, a red lane will be used, requiring additional paperwork, checks and duties depending on the goods in question.

Further details can be found on the gov.uk website. The BVRLA is working with HMRC to understand the implications on the association’s members and their activities. Full details will be communicated to members in due course.
