The Law Commission has published its advice to the Government on remote driving technology and use.
The advice contains 21 conclusions, covering the uses and challenges of remote driving definitions, the current law on approval and use of remotely driven vehicles, remote driving from outside the jurisdiction, and civil and criminal liability.
It includes two key options for reform:
- Remote driving from beyond line-of-sight should require submitting a safety case to the Vehicle Certification Authority (VCA) obtaining a vehicle special order.
- In the long-term there should be a licensing system for Entities for Remote Driving Operation (ERDOs).
The Advice Paper, summary and other materials published alongside the paper are available on the Law Commission website: Remote driving.
