New guidance designed to prevent commercial vehicles, including vans, lorries, buses, coaches and even cranes, from being used as weapons in acts of terrorism has been published.
The standard, PAS 29000:2021, which has been published by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and sponsored by the Department for Transport (DfT), sets out a raft of security measures to prevent criminals and terrorists from accessing commercial vehicles.
Last year, the BVRLA commented on the standard as it wasn’t clear that this standard does not apply to rental and leasing companies who are covered by the Department for Transport’s Rental Vehicle Security Scheme (RVSS). Rental and Commercial Vehicle member organisations automatically sign-up to the RVSS scheme as part of BVRLA membership and monitoring compliance with the scheme has formed part of the association’s governance programme since 1 January 2020. Following the BVRLA’s comments, it has now been made much clearer in the standard with specific reference in the scope of the document to the RVSS scheme.
