Transport for London (TfL) has published its response to the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels user charge consultation that took place between July and early September, receiving over 5,000 responses.
Following the consultation, recommendations were presented to the TfL Board which have now been agreed and will come into effect when the Silvertown tunnel opens in spring 2025.
The BVRLA responded to the consultation focusing on two key areas:
- Proposed discounts/exemptions – providing an EV discount/exemption for certain users (vans and shared mobility) and
- Administration of the user charge/fines – with suggestions on how to best manage the scheme to avoid fines and streamline the process to make it easier for BVRLA members with fine management.
Unfortunately, the consultation did not result in the association’s suggestions being taken forward. This will mean members will need to find a way to manage these fines.
Members are reminded that this scheme will work in the same way as the existing congestion charging scheme. Only where an agreement is less than six months in duration will members be able to transfer liability for any penalty charge notices (PCNs).
Applications for discounts and exemptions will open in early 2025. You can sign up if you would like to receive updates or visit Silvertown Tunnel - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk) for more information.
